"We believe in the power of HIV and AIDS education to change lives, and so provide quality, impartial information on the epidemic to people worldwide."
Avert has been providing HIV and AIDS information since the start of the epidemic.
Founded in 1986, we were one of the first charities to provide people with knowledge about HIV to protect themselves and others from infection, reduce stigma and break down barriers to treatment and support.
In the last 10 years we have provided partnership and grant support to more than 25 organisations working in southern and east Africa, India and Russia. We also launched Avert.org, moving our information provision service online and increasing our reach and impact.
"Our vision is a world with no new HIV infections, and where those living with HIV and AIDS do so with equality and the support they need."
With 36.9 million people living with HIV worldwide, the need for awareness is as great as ever.
Launched in 1995, Avert.org reaches millions of people every year in more than 180 countries with vital information, and our award-winning site is now widely recognised as one of the world’s leading online providers of HIV and AIDS information.
Our work on the ground
Our work helps to strengthen local responses to HIV in some of the most heavily affected countries in the world. We work closely with community-based organisations, currently in sub-Saharan Africa, who offer prevention, care and support where it’s needed most.
Our people
Our dedicated UK-based Editorial team work to continually update Avert.org with valuable information, alongside support from a global network of HIV experts. Our Programmes and Knowledge Sharing team ensures our partners get the support and funding they need to run as efficiently as possible, whilst campaigning for change to tackle the epidemic. Our Administrative team ensures we run efficiently and smoothly to deliver our work.
We are led by Chief Executive Sarah Hand, who has more than 20 years of experience working in the HIV sector internationally and in the UK, in areas including prevention, impact mitigation and key affected populations. We are governed by our board of trustees who bring knowledge from a range of sectors including academia, legal, policy, health, marketing, finance and the third sector.
Our funding
Avert is a registered UK charity and we’re able to help tackle the HIV epidemic thanks to the generosity of our supporters. 95p in every £1 donated to Avert will be spent on HIV prevention, treatment and support.
